Timothée Chalamet has said that his Golden Globe win for Marty Supreme feels "that much sweeter" having lost out in previous award seasons.

Over the weekend, the actor who had been nominated on four previous occasions, finally scooped up the Golden Globe for Best Lead Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Marty Supreme, which saw him see off competition from household names like George Clooney for Jay Kelly and One Battle After Another star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Prior to finally getting his hands on the prize, Chalamet had received Golden Globes nods for roles in Call Me By Your Name, Beautiful Boy, Wonka, as well as last year's nomination for Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.

During his acceptance speech, Chalamet has said that this victory tastes all the more sweeter following those earlier defeats.

"My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up: ‘Always be grateful for what you have,'” he told the crowd. “It’s allowed me to leave the ceremony in the past empty-handed with my head held high, grateful just to be here".

He added: “Josh Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role. Thank you for believing in me. To A24 and Ronnie Bronstein, who co-wrote this with Josh, the amazing cast of this film. If you would have told me when I was 19 years old that I would be thanking Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank…”.

When O'Leary cracked a smile, Chalamet laughed, telling him: “You are laughing, so I got away with that". Referring to his earlier train of thought, he added: “I would have been stunned, but I would have been very grateful".

Chalamet was one of the big winners on the night, as was Irish actress Jessie Buckley who scooped up the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress for Hamnet, while Netflix hit Adolescence was also big winner, with Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham, and Erin Doherty all winning acting awards.

Cooper who played Jamie in the show, a student arrested for the murder of a classmate, paid tribute to his parents, and spoke about how much this role has changed his life.

“What an incredible journey me and my family have been put through. We are forever grateful for what these people have done for me and my family.” Cooper also ended his speech with a shout-out to his beloved Liverpool FC, telling the audience “You’ll never walk alone”.
