Tolls And Gas Prices Are Rising - How Expensive Driving In Dublin Actually Is?

As of late 2025, motorists in Dublin and across Ireland are facing a double squeeze: toll increases beginning January 1st, 2026, and steadily rising fuel prices that are putting more strain on household budgets.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has confirmed that toll hikes will hit several key routes. On the M50, users with a tag or registered account will see a ten cent increase, while heavy goods vehicles over 10,000 kg will pay twenty cents more. The Dublin Port Tunnel will see its southbound toll during weekday morning peaks jump from thirteen euros to fourteen euros. TII said the increase is intended to preserve capacity for heavy goods vehicles, as non‑HGV traffic continued to grow during peak periods in 2025. Some other motorway tolls will also rise modestly — for instance, on the M4, ordinary users will face a ten cent rise, while larger goods vehicles will see a twenty cent increase. Across Ireland, ten toll roads operate on the national network, eight under public-private partnerships and two managed directly by TII, including the M50 and the Dublin Port Tunnel.

Fuel prices are another major burden. Petrol has averaged around one euro seventy per litre in recent months, while diesel is slightly lower at approximately one euro sixty-seven per litre. A mid-size car consuming six litres per 100 kilometres would therefore spend roughly ten euros and thirty-eight cents in petrol to travel 100 kilometres. Over a fifty-kilometre commuter round trip, that works out to about five euros and nineteen cents just for fuel.

Toll costs in Dublin add significantly to these expenses. The M50 currently charges about two euros fifty for tag users. The Dublin Port Tunnel demands thirteen euros during morning peak hours from six a.m. to ten a.m., while off-peak tolls are around three euros fifty. The East Link Toll Bridge, also known as the Thomas Clarke Bridge, is approximately two euros thirty for private cars. With the upcoming increases, daily commuters passing through one or more toll zones could see a monthly bill of several tens of euros, or even hundreds if multiple tolls are included in a regular route.

Let’s illustrate for a driver with a moderate commute, say 25 km each way (50 km round trip) working 20 days a month. Assume a car that does 6 L/100 km and uses petrol at €1.73/L.

  • Fuel cost: 50 km × 20 = 1,000 km → 60 L → 60 × €1.73 = €103.80

  • Tolls: If that driver crosses the M50 each day (tag rate ~€2.50) → 20 × €2.50 = €50

  • If also passing through the Port Tunnel at peak times (say 10 days) → 10 × €14 = €140, plus off-peak days (10 × €3.50) = €35€175 in tolls

That totals: €103.80 (fuel) + €50 (M50) + €175 (Port Tunnel) = €328.80 for the month in operating costs (not counting insurance, depreciation, parking, maintenance). If the driver avoids the Port Tunnel or drives at off‑peak times, that toll component could be much lower, but the example shows the potential scale.

Several factors contribute to why driving in Dublin is increasingly expensive. Fuel taxes make up a large portion of the price per litre, including excise, carbon tax, and VAT. Toll fees are unavoidable on major routes, particularly with the barrier-free M50 system, which leaves few alternative routes. Peak surcharges, such as those at the Dublin Port Tunnel, directly affect commuters traveling during busy hours. Even relatively small increases per trip add up over daily commuting and multiple toll crossings.

Driving in Dublin in 2025 has become a significant financial consideration. Rising fuel costs and tolls combined mean that commuting by car can be a substantial monthly expense for many people, and these costs are expected to increase further with the new toll adjustments and ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices.

Early next year, tolls are going increase on all motorways linking Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow
