Tánaiste Leo Varadkar was trending on social media yet again this morning. The TD, known for his love of all things media, shared his first-ever TikTok video with the words, “Meeting TikTok today. 1,100 new hires this year is very deserving of my first attempt I think! Go easy”

No chance, mate! Twitter immediately lit up with commentary on the just-a-tad awkward video – most of it unflattering.

The Tánaiste was trending on social media in recent weeks under the hashtag #LeoTheLeak after it was revealed that while he was Taoiseach he gave confidential Government documents to a friend of his. While that was a serious question of ethics and protocols that warranted a full interrogation in the Dáil, the criticism of his TikTok video is more lighthearted.

One Twitter and TikTok user, Dylan Connolly, went so far as to share his own version of Mr Varadkar’s video.

Mr Varadkar was meeting with TikTok management in Dublin today. The company is expanding its base here in Ireland and will be taking on a large number of employees.  The social media giant is a favourite among young people. Mr Varadkar’s video points out the importance of multinationals to the Irish economy.
