A young girl is in critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car in Co Westmeath.

The incident occurred on the Killallon Road in Clonmellon shortly before 7:30pm yesterday.

She was airlifted to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, where she remains in a critical state.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination, and the road is currently closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, and who were travelling in the area between 6:45pm and 7:45pm.
