Fifty years after Aerosmith first introduced themselves to the world, give or take a few calendar technicalities, the band are reopening the vaults in spectacular fashion.

The Boston rock icons have announced a Legendary Edition reissue of their self-titled debut album, expanding the 1973 release into a sprawling collector’s set that leans unapologetically into scale, nostalgia and excess. While technically marking the album’s 50th anniversary, despite arriving 53 years after its original release, the new edition aims to treat the record not as a footnote in rock history, but as the moment everything began.

At the centre of the release is the $300 Legendary Collector’s Edition Fanpack 5LP box set, a package that feels closer to a museum exhibit than a standard reissue. The most eye-catching inclusion is a seventies-style satin bomber jacket, complete with the album artwork printed inside the lining, a wearable nod to the era when Aerosmith were still fighting their way out of local clubs.

Musically, the set is equally comprehensive. It features a newly remastered version of the original album pressed on clear vinyl, alongside a brand-new 2024 mix on translucent red vinyl. These are joined by a double-LP capturing the band’s Paul’s Mall performance in Boston from March 20, 1973, originally broadcast on WBCN just two months after the album’s release, offering a snapshot of Aerosmith in their rawest, hungriest form.

Also included are previously unreleased studio recordings, rehearsal takes and early jams, expanding the debut era far beyond its original eight tracks.

The Collector’s Edition goes further still. A 12-inch single featuring both the remastered and remixed versions of Dream On arrives pressed on clear UV “cloud effect” vinyl, accompanied by a printed slipmat, sticker sheet, and a fold-out 24” x 36” poster.

There’s also a hardback book packed with reflections and tributes from an eclectic group of admirers, including Dolly Parton, Corey Taylor, Mike McCready, Jerry Cantrell, Chris Robinson, Slash, and Sully Erna, artists whose own careers trace directly back to the influence of Aerosmith’s earliest work.

All of it is housed inside a custom box featuring a 3D pop-up diorama, transforming the packaging itself into part of the experience.

For fans less inclined toward the premium end of the scale, several alternative formats are available. These include a 5LP box without the jacket, a 4LP set, single-vinyl editions on black and coloured pressings, a triple-CD version and a standard single CD. The full Fanpack editions will be sold exclusively through the Aerosmith webstore.

The reissue arrives at a moment when the band’s legacy feels firmly cemented. Songs like Dream On, Mama Kin and Walkin’ The Dog have long since transcended their origins, but this release re-centres the album as a starting point, a debut recorded before superstardom, before expectation, and before excess reshaped the band’s future.

The Aerosmith (Legendary Edition) lands on March 20, 2026, offering fans a chance to step back into the moment where one of American rock’s defining stories first took flight, louder, larger and more detailed than ever before.
