Almost one in five adults now proudly considers themselves the ‘geek’ of their friendship group, according to new research that suggests geek culture has firmly entered the mainstream.

A study of 2,000 adults found that 18 per cent identify as the geeky one among their friends, while 46 per cent admit they are a geek in certain aspects of their adult lives. This marks a significant shift in attitudes, given that 56 per cent say they would never have wanted to be labelled a geek during their school years.

The research also revealed that 69 per cent believe being healthily obsessed with particular interests makes people more interesting, while 59 per cent say they have never tried to hide their geeky tendencies to avoid judgement.

Commissioned by TLC to coincide with the channel’s free-to-air launch, the study highlights how popular television has helped reshape perceptions. TLC’s programming includes flagship shows such as the science-based sitcom The Big Bang Theory and its spin-off Young Sheldon.

Among the most common signs of geekiness are comparing specifications before buying any gadget, watching behind-the-scenes documentaries, and keeping multiple browser tabs open ‘just in case’. Other popular habits include memorising film quotes, creating spreadsheets for personal projects, and watching YouTube tutorials purely for enjoyment.

A spokesperson for TLC said: “When you look at the definition of the word ‘geek’ – a person who is knowledgeable about and obsessively interested in a particular subject – these are characteristics I think we can all identify with in some way, shape or form.”

They added: “If it’s good enough for Sheldon and the Big Bang gang, then it’s time to embrace geek-chic and celebrate traits like curiosity, focus and passion.”

The findings suggest attitudes have evolved rapidly, with half of respondents saying geek culture has become more mainstream over the past decade, and 36 per cent believing it is now cool to be a geek. Traits most associated with geekiness include being obsessive (39 per cent), quirky (38 per cent) and intelligent (36 per cent). Famous figures frequently described as geeks include Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and Bill Gates.

Subjects most commonly linked to geek culture are computer science (42 per cent), mathematics (37 per cent) and science (36 per cent).

Television has played a major role in shaping perceptions, with 63 per cent agreeing that media portrayals have influenced how geeks are viewed. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory was voted the ultimate TV geek, ahead of Spock from Star Trek and Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons.

Another TLC spokesperson said: “TV is a powerful medium, and it’s important that everyone can see themselves reflected in characters who share their quirks and passions.”
