Bono surprised Dolly Parton by sending a bagpiper to play for her on the singer's 80th birthday.

The country singer celebrated this milestone after sharing a video of herself as she was serenaded by Nashville-based Irish musician Patrick D'Arcy. The Dublin native played a tune of 'Happy Birthday' on the bagpipes as Parton was presented with a cake.

This comes as the singer's home state Tennessee was declared 'Dolly Parton Day'.

On the cake, the message read: “Love… Bono” in iced lettering, as well as some candles. “Wow, this is from Bono!” Parton said, before blowing out the candles. “I did it!”.

Parton then added by telling D'Arcy:  “Well, thank you. I saw that cake said, ‘From Bono’, so he must have sent you as a present to me? Well, thank you guys. I appreciate all of you", adding: “It’s an absolute delight to be here on behalf of the whole band".

“And Bono, I know him personally. Well, good to see you. And thank you. That’s a surprise.” She then joked: “Are you calling me an old bag?".

The post on social media also included the caption: “Now that’s what you call a surprise! This old bag sure feels the love! Thank you, Bono and @u2 for making my birthday extra special".

D'Arcy shared a series of images of himself and Parton, saying that he played “a few tunes, on behalf of Bono and the boys, for Dolly Parton for her 80th birthday”.

Irish musician D'Arcy also added that he'd “presented her with a pint of Guinness”, writing: “There was even time for a nice chat. She was exactly who you’d hope she’d be. Happy 80th Birthday Dolly!".

Back in October, Dolly Parton's sister Frieda had called on fans to send their "prayers" as the singer continues to face "health challenges".

This happened after the singer was  forced to call off her Las Vegas residency in December due to health issues. While she did go into detail on these issues, Parton said that she was "not going to be able to rehearse" for this tour, and would not be prepared for these shows.

“Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly. Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been led to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me", Frieda added. More on this from Nova here.
