Ciara Mageean is to be honoured prior to kick off in the rugby match between Ireland and Argentina at the Aviva Stadium tonight.

The late athlete passed away earlier this week aged 34, having been battling stage four bowel cancer.

The Irish Independent reported that Mageean will be among four people who have recently passed away, that will be honoured with a minute's applause before Ireland's opening match of the November Internationals tonight in Dublin.

The other three people being honoured are former IRFU CEI, Philip Browne, former Ireland and Munster forward, Phil O'Callaghan, and former Ireland and Lions back row, Fergus Slattery.

The tribute to Mageean is a breakaway from norm of only rugby players being honoured before international test matches, but one which is very much welcomed, as tributes are paid to a beloved athlete, and former gold medallist at the European Championships in the 1500 metres.

She also competed at two Olympic Games, holding Irish national records in 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m and one mile races.

Ciara Mageean was previously an invited guest for the Ireland women's team for their 2020 Six Nations clash with Wales, and presented their players with their match jerseys.

She was laid to rest at St Patrick's Church in Ballyphilip in her native Co Down on Tuesday last.

Her death was confirmed yesterday with a statement shared on her Instagram account.

“At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed", a statement read yesterday. “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam".

Paying tribute to Mageean, her friend and fellow athlete, Phily Bowden wrote called her, her "fierce friend". Read more on this from Nova here.

Ireland will take on Argentina at the Aviva Stadium, which kicks of at 8.10pm, and will be broadcast live on Virgin Media television.
