Dave Grohl presented the Special Achievement Award to one of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge founders.

The Webby Awards, which celebrates the best of the internet, took place on Monday night (May 18th) and saw ALS Ice Bucket Challenge founder, Pat Quinn, collecting the Special Achievement Award. The award honoured the viral movement of last summer where participants filmed themselves being drenched with ice water in order to promote awareness of ALS.

Dave Grohl presented Pat Quinn with the award as Grohl contributed one of the most memorable videos to the cause, a re-enactment of the famous bucket of blood scene from the movie Carrie. Grohl had been challenged by fellow rocker Zac Brown who had used a fire truck to pour water over himself and his band. In order to beat Brown at his own game, Grohl decided to use what he called “the most famous bucket-on-the-head scene of all time!” and couldn’t believe that he was the “genius that actually got to it first.”

In his speech Grohl reminded everyone that “trends happen quickly on the Internet and it’s easy to get distracted by a really awesome video of a monkey washing a cat. But we can’t unlearn what we’ve learned. One we need to continue the fight until we defeat ALS. And two, the Internet is the most powerful megaphone we have to make sure that that message is heard.”

When Quinn accepted his award he summed up the ongoing fight by vowing the challenge would continue “every August until a cure.”

Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters will headline Slane on May 30th.
