Emmy Award Winning Actor Andre Braugher Dies Aged 61

Tributes have been paid to US actor Andre Braugher, who died aged 61.

The actor enjoyed a prosperous career, which saw him land two Emmy Awards, including the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street. The series ran from 1993 to 1999.

Braugher also starred as Captain Raymond Holt in US Comedy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, alongside Terry Crews, and Andy Sanberg.

The actor’s second Emmy triumph arrived in 2006, which saw him win Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Mini-Series, for his role as professional burglar Nick Atwater in Thief.

His breakthrough role saw him star alongside Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Denzil Washington in the 1989 film, Glory, directed by Ed Zwick.

This film also saw Washington win his first Academy Award for his supporting role.

Andre Braugher’s death was confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, who announced that he died after a brief illness on Monday.

Other roles also include Benjamin Dr Ben Gideon in Gideon’s Crossing, O Davis in Tuskegee Airmen, and Owen in Men of a Certain Age. All roles saw Braugher nominated for Emmy Award nominations.

After his death was confirmed, several household names paid tributes to Andre Braugher, including Terry Crews.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent”, Crews said.

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you”, he also added. “Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like”. 

Mike Royce, who created Men Of A Certain Age also shared this heartfelt message.

“This is impossible for me to process. He was [the] best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss”, he said.

Elsewhere, David Simon who wrote the book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets on which Homicide: Life on the Street is based on also posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Braugher also recently starred in She Said, the biographical film which saw him play New York Times executive editor Dean Banquet, overseeing two reporters played by Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan.

This film was based on two reporters who broke the Harvey Weinstein story.
