Joe Biden was among the household names to pay tribute from overseas in honour of the Mayo GAA team following their history-making All Ireland victory yesterday.
Yesterday, Mayo put 75 years of agony and pain behind them to beat last year's champions, Kerry to win the Sam Maguire Cup at Croke Park. They did this on a 1-20 to 1-17 score line yesterday, with the final hooter met with scenes of unbridled joy and jubilation for the Green and Red.
Teenager, Darragh Beirne's second half goal set them on their way, while Ryan O'Donoghue delivered a man of the match performance with 0-5. This was the perfect way for teenage sensation Kobe McDonald to sign off, with the forward set to leave for the AFL in Australia.
In what will surely go down as one of the greatest moments in the history of modern Irish sport, a number of other players finally got their hands on a treasured All Ireland medal, like Aidan O'Shea, Paddy Durcan, Stephen Coen, and Matthew Ruane to name a few, players that also played in several of those heart-breaking final defeats in the past.
Since their last All Ireland success in 1951, Mayo had played in 13 All Ireland finals, losing 11 and drawing two, with current manager Andy Moran featuring five of those defeats as a player between 2004 and 2017.
Following this, former US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney and the Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, all paid tribute to Mayo.
Taking to social media, former US President Biden, who visited Ballina, Mayo three years ago, and has family from there, shared his congratulations to the team.
"I said it three years ago when I was in Ballina: Mayo for Sam! And I meant it," he said. "I said it because I know what it means not just for the county of Mayo but to my own family's story. Today, the dream becomes reality".
"Congratulations to my friends in Mayo. You earned this victory. Enjoy every minute. Sam is coming home".
"A proud son of County Mayo tonight".

Meanwhile, Oasis bandmates, Noel and Liam Gallagher, who spent many years travelling to Mayo, home of their late grandmother Margaret, also paid tribute to them.
Liam wrote on X: "Congratulations MAYO lick it up to ras very proud LG x".

Elsewhere, Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney wrote that he was "proud" to have roots in Mayo: "After 75 years, the curse is broken and the Sam Maguire Cup is coming home".

In Castlebar, and towns across the county, crowds gathered to celebrate the county's first All Ireland success in more than seven decades, with a homecoming for the ages expected later today.
