Daryl Hall has detailed the reasons why he is suing bandmate John Oates.
The pop duo, who are famous hits ‘Maneater’, ‘Private Eyes’, and ‘Kiss On My List’, have been embroiled in an ongoing legal row.
This centres around a reported deal by Oates to sell his share of Whole Oates Enterprises to Primary Wave.
In a statement written by Hall, he claims that his former musical partner Oates’ plan to sell a stake in a business had left him “blindsided”, claims which Oates has dismissed as “inaccurate”.
According to a declaration, which was filed yesterday (November 29), Hall has insisted that Oates has breached their business partnership agreement.
“bad faith”
It has been reported that Daryl Hall has accused John Oates of making a “completely clandestine and bad faith move”, in trying to sell a share of the company without Hall’s permission.
Hall has further alleged that he only found out about the deal just two days before he was to begin a month-long tour.
According to reports, Hall does not agree with the “business model” of Primary Wave.
Hall claims that any sale to them, could do “unimaginable” harm to Whole Oats Enterprises, in terms of trademarks, its personal name, online properties, and royalties.
“I was blindsided by this information,” Hall insists.
He also adds, “I have no intention of becoming partners with Primary Wave, and the Oates Trust cannot be permitted to thrust a new partner upon me in this outrageous fashion”.
This deal has also “violated” the nature of their partnership, according to Hall, who also alleged that this deal was arranged “completely behind my back”.
“There was never a hint that he would try to ambush me with a sale”, Hall also wrote in a statement, where he also claimed that he was left with major legal fees during the mediation.
Oates Responds
Following this, a “deeply hurt” John Oates rejected these claims made by Hall. He described them as “inflammatory, outlandish, and inaccurate statements”.
“I have no idea who or what is motivating Daryl to take these steps and make such salacious statements, but I am deeply hurt”, Oates said.
Oates also insists that he spent that last 50 years, ensuring that fans “perceive the Hall & Oates music and brand in the most positive light”.
Elsewhere, Oates has even claimed that it was Hall who went rogue.
He claimed that his bandmate “has consistently and publicly been adamant about being perceived as an individual rather than as part of a duo or group”.
Oates has even alleged that Hall had insisted that they go by the name of “Daryl Hall and John Oates”, instead of “Hall & Oates”.
“On this point I agree. I now must act with truthfulness and make decisions that are right for myself, my family, and my artistic future”, Oates stated.
“Committing myself to confidentiality prohibits me from being able to discuss publicly the truth, but that is the agreement that I made,” he added. “I can only say that Daryl’s accusations that I breached our agreement, went ‘behind’ his back, ‘acted in bad faith,’ and the like, are not true”.
Earlier this month, Daryl Hall was granted a restraining order against John Oates, as this legal row continues. More here.
