Jim Carrey has shut down an online conspiracy theory claiming he had been cloned after fans reacted to his dramatically different appearance at this year’s César Awards.

The 63-year-old actor attended the prestigious French film ceremony on February 26, where he was presented with an honorary César recognising his contribution to cinema. But instead of the accolade dominating headlines, social media quickly fixated on his appearance.

Photographs from the event showed Carrey sporting significantly longer hair than usual, styled loosely around his shoulders, along with what some viewers claimed were noticeably lighter eyes. The change was enough to spark a wave of speculation online, with a fringe group of users suggesting the man on stage was not Carrey at all.

One social media user wrote: "I've been talking about human cloning for a long time and I'm glad to see it finally gain some traction. Jim Carrey was cloned years ago. Something has changed behind the scenes to allow us to see unfinished and malfunctioning clones."

Another suggested a more calculated explanation, posting: "Calling it now. That's not Jim Carrey and its all a publicity stunt for a movie he's in soon or a documentary."

The theory gained traction across various platforms, tapping into a broader trend of celebrity “clone” conspiracies that periodically resurface whenever a public figure debuts a new look or appears noticeably different due to styling, ageing or lighting.

However, there is no mystery behind Carrey’s appearance.

A representative for the actor confirmed to the Daily Mail that Carrey himself attended the ceremony, firmly dismissing the cloning claims. Meanwhile, Gregory Caulier, general delegate of the César Awards, also addressed the speculation and emphasised that Carrey’s presence had been carefully organised months in advance.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” Caulier explained.

He added that the actor had taken the honour seriously, revealing that Carrey spent eight months practising French in preparation for his acceptance speech. He was also supported on the night by 12 members of his family, who travelled with him to celebrate the moment.

The honorary César is one of France’s highest film distinctions, previously awarded to global cinema icons in recognition of lifetime achievement such as George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson and Mery Streep.

Carrey’s career spans more than four decades, from his breakout in 1990s comedies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, to more dramatic performances in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His elastic physicality and distinctive facial expressions have made him one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars.

Public fascination with his evolving appearance is not entirely new.

In recent years, Carrey has stepped back from mainstream acting, focusing on painting and political artwork, and has occasionally appeared with longer hair and a fuller beard than audiences were accustomed to during his blockbuster heyday. Ageing, styling changes and lighting can significantly alter how someone looks on camera — particularly at high-profile red-carpet events.

Celebrity cloning conspiracies, while largely dismissed, have become a recurring internet phenomenon. Similar claims have been made about various public figures over the past decade, often fuelled by altered images, out-of-context clips or simple changes in fashion and grooming.

In Carrey’s case, the explanation appears straightforward: a new hairstyle, and the natural passage of time.

The actor’s focus on the night, however, was on the honour itself. Being recognised by the French Academy marked a significant international acknowledgment of a career that has balanced slapstick comedy with philosophical introspection.

Despite the online chatter, organisers have made clear there was nothing unusual about his attendance.

The months of preparation, family presence and carefully planned visit underscore that the only real story of the evening was a celebrated actor receiving a long-arranged tribute — not a science-fiction subplot playing out in real life.

Jim Carrey Receives Ultimate Homage at the 2026 Césars

A tribute was paid to American actor Jim Carrey, 64, who received an honorary César Award in recognition of his entire career.

When people hear his name, many immediately think of his explosive performance in The Mask, the 1994 comedy in which a timid bank clerk transforms into a wild, green alter ego whenever he puts on a magical mask. Yet some may forget that eight years earlier he had appeared in Peggy Sue Got Married, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

The year 1994 marked his major breakthrough with mainstream audiences, as he also starred in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber. But Carrey proved he was far more than a comic performer confined to one genre. He went on to deliver critically acclaimed performances in The Truman Show and took on more dramatic roles, including the romantic drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry.

In recent years, Carrey appeared in more commercially driven projects such as the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He has officially stepped back from acting to focus on painting, but on this occasion he was honoured specifically for his work as an actor on the stage of the Olympia in Paris.

During the 51st César Awards ceremony on Thursday, 26 February, the Canadian-American star — who was present in Paris — received an honorary César celebrating a career that has moved fluidly between comedy and drama.

The award was presented by filmmaker Michel Gondry, who directed Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The ceremony audience gave him a lengthy standing ovation as he acknowledged those who had been part of his professional journey, as well as his family and his father, Percy Joseph Carrey. He also noted that he has French ancestry dating back approximately 300 years.

To mark the occasion, the ceremony opened with an extended sketch by Benjamin Lavernhe, a member of the Comédie-Française, who served as master of ceremonies. His energetic performance paid tribute to The Mask, one of the most iconic films of Carrey’s career. Actor Emmanuel Curtil, the French voice of Carrey, also joined him on stage.

A distinctive figure in American cinema, Carrey became one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces in the 1990s, following his early beginnings in stand-up comedy. His elastic facial expressions and physical comedy drew comparisons to legends such as Jerry Lewis and even Charlie Chaplin.

In 1998, he successfully transitioned into drama with The Truman Show, playing an ordinary man who discovers that his entire life is a staged television production. The performance earned him a Golden Globe Award, followed by a second the following year for his portrayal of comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon, directed by Milos Forman.

One of the most celebrated performances of his career came in 2004 when he starred opposite Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The film remains a standout in his filmography and further demonstrated his range as an actor.

His career later continued with major international box office successes such as A Christmas Carol and the Sonic franchise, before he began stepping back from the film industry in the early 2020s.

Now, with this honorary César, Jim Carrey has been formally recognised in France for a body of work that spans slapstick comedy, heartfelt drama and decades of global cinematic influence.
