Metallica are urging fans to donate blood ahead of their upcoming UK tour dates after teaming up with blood services across Britain in a landmark new campaign.

The heavy metal legends have partnered with the Welsh Blood Service, NHS Blood and Transplant England, and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service in what is being described as the first-ever collaboration between UK blood services and a major rock band.

The initiative forms part of the work carried out by the band’s charity foundation, All Within My Hands, and aims to encourage fans to give blood and plasma around the dates of the band’s massive M72 World Tour shows this summer.

Dedicated blood donation sessions are set to run around the band’s UK performances, including their concert at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on June 28, as well as dates in London and Glasgow.

In a statement, a representative for Metallica said the band wanted to leave a positive impact on the communities they visit while touring.

“Wherever we go on tour, we want to give something meaningful back to the communities that welcome us,” the spokesperson said.

“We’ve seen in the United States and Australia how working with blood services can help raise awareness of blood donation and support patients, and we’re excited to bring that same approach to the UK.”

“As we close out the European leg of the ‘M72 World Tour’ in the UK, we’re asking fans to step up and be part of something bigger than the show. Looking out for one another and supporting those who rely on donated blood every day is a simple act that can make a powerful difference.”

The campaign follows similar successful initiatives during previous tour dates in the United States and Australia, where the band helped encourage thousands of people to donate blood. One concert stop in Philadelphia reportedly resulted in fans donating 152 units of blood.

Blood services across the UK say maintaining supplies remains critical, particularly as donated blood has a shelf life of just 35 days.

Donations are used to support cancer patients, people undergoing surgery, new mothers, those living with long-term conditions including sickle cell disease, and emergency situations.

Alan Prosser, director of the Welsh Blood Service, described the partnership as “a truly unique moment for blood donation across the UK.”

“Partnering with a band of Metallica’s global reach allows us to connect with new audiences and shine a spotlight on the ongoing need for blood,” he said.

“Just as metal music runs strongly through Metallica fans’ veins, so does the blood which gives the power to save up to three lives with every donation.”

Andrew Harris from the Welsh Blood Service also revealed the idea initially came from staff members who were themselves huge Metallica fans.

“There’s a lot of fans in the Welsh Blood Service of Metallica, it turns out,” he told BBC Radio Wales.

“A colleague came into the office and said, ‘wouldn’t it be great if we worked with Metallica?’”

“We actually found out about this because of the success of a similar promotion in the United States and Australia. It’s led to thousands of people donating blood, that may or may not think about donating, which is what’s really important about this partnership.”

The upcoming UK shows form part of Metallica’s ongoing M72 World Tour, which has become one of the biggest live music events in the world since launching in 2023.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Metallica are widely regarded as one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. The group rose to fame with landmark albums including Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and The Black Album, helping bring thrash metal into the mainstream.

Over more than four decades, the band has sold millions of records worldwide and built a reputation for massive live performances, with hits including Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, One, and Seek & Destroy remaining staples of rock music culture.
