Louis McCartney has joined the cast for the upcoming BBC drama, Hamburg Days.

The drama, will look at The Beatles' early years in Germany, before they became one of the biggest names in the world of music, with Northern Irish actor, McCartney to star as drummer, Ringo Starr.

Hamburg Days is a series based on the book from Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr, with Voormann also working as a consultant on the series. He also designed the cover of Revolver, the Fab Four's 1966 album. It will look at The Beatles' residencies at venues across the St Pauli district in Hamburg, which was a key period in the group's development prior to bursting onto the scene.

The cast for the series, which runs for six parts, will see McCartney star alongside, Asa Butterfield, Jonny Lee Miller and Christine Tremarco, as part of a newly announced cast. Butterfield will play Beatles manager Brian Epstein, with Tremarco playing Mimi Smith, John Lennon's aunt and guardian, with Miller playing Jim McCartney, father of Paul McCartney.

Paul McCartney will be played by Ellis Murphy, with Rhys Mannion playing John Lennon, while George Harrison will be portrayed Harvey Brett. Voormann will be portrayed by Casper von Bülow, with Luna Jordan playing Kircherr, who was a photographer.

Elsewhere, Stuart Sutcliffe, original Beatles bassist, will be played by Louis Landau, with first drummer Pete Best played by Patrick Gilmore. Cynthia Lennon will be played by Darci Shaw, with Liverpool promoter, Allan Williams played by Ryan Sampson. Jordan Myrie will be portraying music promoter, Lord Woodbine.

The music for Hamburg Days will be curated by David Holmes, with Christian Schwochow serving as the showrunner.

A release date for the BBC One series has yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.

News of this comes as a separate set of Beatles biopics are to be directed by Sam Mendes and will be released next year, starring Irish actors Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, with the latter describing filming these biopics as "incredible".

"It’s such a big family out there, and it’s such a big movie, but it has that indie soul to it, where I’m feeling super safe to reach and bring forward the most vulnerable truths and the most… just really dig deep with the performance as Ringo", Keoghan told Deadline. More on this from Nova here.

It also emerged that previously lost footage of The Beatles performing on the BBC's Top Of The Pops from 1964, was discovered. Find out more on this here.
