The Killers have been announced as the headline act for this year’s UEFA Champions League Final kick-off show, bringing one of the biggest nights in club football together with one of the most recognisable bands of the past two decades.

The Las Vegas rockers will take to the stage at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on May 30, just ahead of the final itself.

Frontman Brandon Flowers and his bandmates are expected to deliver a hit-filled set, likely including their iconic track ‘Mr. Brightside’—a song that has become something of an unofficial football anthem, particularly among UK and Irish fans.

Formed in Las Vegas in 2001, The Killers rose to global fame with their debut album Hot Fuss, which featured era-defining singles like ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘Somebody Told Me’ and ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’.

Known for their blend of indie rock, new wave and heartland Americana influences, the band have gone on to sell millions of records worldwide and remain a staple of festival headline slots, including frequent appearances in Ireland where they’ve built a loyal following.

Their connection to football culture has grown in recent years, particularly after a viral moment in 2024 when they paused a live show to stream England’s dramatic Euros semi-final victory, with ‘Mr. Brightside’ blasting as fans celebrated—further cementing the song’s place in terrace culture.

The performance will form part of the pre-match entertainment for the UEFA Champions League Final, the biggest annual fixture in European club football. Organised by UEFA, the tournament sees the top teams from across Europe’s domestic leagues compete throughout the season, culminating in a globally watched final that regularly draws audiences in the hundreds of millions.

While Ireland does not have clubs competing at this level, due to the structure and ranking of European leagues, Irish fans are heavily invested in the competition.

Many follow English Premier League sides such as Liverpool FC, Manchester United and Arsenal FC, all of whom are regular contenders in the tournament. The final has long been a major event in Ireland’s sporting calendar, often drawing huge TV audiences and packed pubs across the country.

To mark their headline slot, The Killers have also appeared in a promotional short film alongside football icon David Beckham, racing towards the stadium in a nod to the scale and excitement of the occasion.

Speaking about the performance, the band said: “When we were asked to perform at the UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show presented by Pepsi, we said yes without hesitation, some stages speak for themselves.” They added: “We’re honoured to celebrate the incredible teams and players at what will undoubtedly be an epic match.”

With a global audience tuning in and one of rock’s most enduring bands providing the soundtrack, the 2026 final is shaping up to be as much a cultural spectacle as a sporting one—something that will undoubtedly resonate with Irish fans who have long embraced both football and The Killers in equal measure.
