The Simpsons' star Nancy Cartwright has insisted that she will not be replaced by AI when she retires.
Cartwright, who has voiced Bart Simpson, as well as other roles of the cartoon comedy, has spoken about the possibility of AI taking over her role when she finishes up.
However, speaking to People, Cartwright has reassured fans that there are no plans to replace her voice with AI.
“I think I would choose a successor [instead of AI], and I’ll tell you why — because AI has no heart and I think that’s a missing ingredient", she said. “[AI] might sound pretty close to Nancy Cartwright, but I got passion. We’re spiritual beings, we can emote passion and uplift people and stuff. And I don’t know that a computer can do something like that".
The use of AI has had a profound impact in the entertainment industry, with the debate continually advancing over the years.
Last year, The Simpsons' director James Cameron said that AI would not replace human actors, speaking about this to Variety in a recent interview.
“The creative culture is so strong across all these artists that I can look at a shot for review for the very first time and say ‘It’s done", he said. “That is the craziest thing… So this idea of really encouraging them to think as storytellers is really paying off. And this is why the Gen AI stuff is never going to take the place of that. We need our artists. It’s artists in control of the process, right?”.
Back in January, The Simpsons officially retired another iconic character, aka Duffman, the beloved Duff Beer mascot, after nearly three decades on air. This comes after Barry Duffman, the character behind the mascot, visits the Simpsons' home to tell them that he is retiring.
Duffman was renowned for his catchphrase 'Oh yeah!', Duffman has been a fan favorite since his debut in 1997's 'The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson'. More on this story from Nova here.
