Democrats have secured a major victory in the US midterm elections, taking control of both the House and Senate in a result that represents a significant blow to President Donald Trump and his administration.
The scale of the Democratic victory has surprised political analysts. Trump's opposing party has made major gains not only in traditional battleground states but also in areas that have long been Republican strongholds.

One of the biggest surprises came in Texas, where Democrats have won the governor's office and a US Senate seat, ending almost four decades of Republican dominance in statewide elections.
James Talarico has now become the first Democratic Party senator for Texas since 1988, making this week's result a historic moment for the United States Of America.
The candidate defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race.

The victories were part of a much wider Democratic surge across the country.
Democrats also made history in South Carolina, where Annie Andrews won a Senate seat that the party had not held this century.
In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown defeated his Republican opponent, while Adam Hamilton won in Kansas, where Democrats had not secured a Senate seat since 1932.
Although opinion polls had suggested Democrats were likely to perform well, the scale of their success went far beyond what many analysts had predicted.
Voters appeared particularly concerned about the cost of living, with nearly nine in ten identifying it as a major factor in their decision.

Donald Trump's tariffs and the war with Iran were among the issues contributing to economic concerns, while exit polls showed widespread dissatisfaction with the direction of the country.
The results also suggest that Republicans have lost support among several key voter groups, including young people and Latino voters, who played an important role in Trump's 2024 election victory.
For Democrats, winning control of both chambers of Congress marks a major political turnaround after years of Republican dominance.
However, the victory also brings new pressure, with voters now expecting the party to deliver on the economic issues that helped drive its success.
Trump has said he will accept the election results and is prepared to work with Democrats, although the president will retain his veto powers.
