Oasis have reportedly caused a stir after their legal team forced the BBC to remove a World Cup tribute video featuring celebrities singing the band’s iconic hit Wonderwall.

The BBC had reportedly hoped the video would go viral after the 1995 anthem became closely associated with England’s run at the FIFA World Cup.

The clip featured a host of well-known faces, including Stephen Fry, Maya Jama, Claudia Winkleman and Micah Richards, singing along to the Oasis classic.

However, the footage was reportedly pulled after Liam and Noel Gallagher’s legal team intervened.

Some viewers who caught a glimpse of the video before it was removed described it as “excruciating”, with others comparing it to a “car crash.”

According to reports, the BBC had failed to secure the correct permissions to use Wonderwall on social media.

A source told The Sun: “The BBC dropped an enormous ball with the Oasis video as it caused a riot.”

They claimed BBC Sport had noticed the huge reaction to Wonderwall during the tournament and decided to bring together a number of celebrities for the tribute.

“Their idea was it would go viral but instead Oasis's legal team shot it down,” the source said.

They added: “Apparently the BBC didn't seek the correct permissions to use the song on social media so they didn't have a leg to stand on.”

The reported intervention comes as Wonderwall enjoys a major resurgence thanks to England’s World Cup campaign.

The Oasis classic has become the unofficial soundtrack to the tournament, with supporters regularly breaking into huge singalongs following England matches.

Following England’s quarter-final victory over Norway, the song was streamed 3.8 million times worldwide, including 379,000 plays in the UK.

It also climbed to No. 2 on Spotify’s global chart and was sitting at No. 2 in the UK singles chart, behind Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s Rein Me In.

The song’s popularity has continued to surge throughout the tournament.

Following England’s victory over Mexico, Wonderwall recorded a 306% increase in listeners during the hour after the final whistle compared with the same period the previous day.

Streams rose from 1,628 to 6,614 during that hour, while daily plays increased by 18% to 200,441.

The anthem has even become part of England’s celebrations, with captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham among those seen joining in with teammates and supporters.

Liam Gallagher has also embraced the renewed popularity of the song.

Following another post-match singalong, he reacted on social media, writing: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”

Noel Gallagher has also welcomed the role the song has played during England’s World Cup journey.

After England’s victory over Croatia, when players and supporters once again sang the Oasis classic together, he said: “‘Wonderwall’ belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players.”

Originally released in 1995 as part of Oasis’ second studio album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, Wonderwall has remained one of the band’s best-known songs and has long been a favourite among football fans.

The renewed interest comes as excitement continues to build around the Oasis reunion documentary, Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger, which is set to arrive on Disney+ and in cinemas this year.

The documentary will explore the band’s long-awaited comeback and their return to the spotlight.
