Legendary actor Harrison Ford is to receive a lifetime achievement award from the main union representing Hollywood actors.

The Air Force One star is to be given the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement award as part of the rebranded Actor Awards, having been formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Ford is being recognised for a stellar career on the big and small screen, spanning decades.

This award is handed to one performer every year who embodies, "finest ideals of the acting profession" by the SAG-AFTRA, whose president Sean Astin had this to say.

"Harrison Ford is a singular presence in American life; an actor whose iconic characters have shaped world culture", Astin stated. "His career has been endlessly exciting, always returning to his love of acting. We are honoured to celebrate a legend whose impact on our craft is indelible".

Ford is the latest recipient of this award, with previous winners including Jane Fonda, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Taylor.

"deeply honoured"

Giving his reaction to this news, Harrison Ford said that he was "deeply honoured" to be awarded this prestigious prize.

"To be acknowledged by my fellow actors means a great deal to me," he said. "I've spent most of my life on film sets, working alongside incredible actors and crews, and I've always felt grateful to be part of this community".

Harrison Ford is renowned for his recurring roles in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movie franchises, as well as starring as Rick Deckard in 1982's Blade Runner. He also reprised this role 35 years later, for Blade Runner 2049.

Ford also worked alongside Helen Mirren in the Western drama, 1923, and comedy drama, Shrinking.

The actor will receive this award at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA on March 1, which will be streamed live on Netflix.

Earlier this year, it emerged that Harrison Ford previously worked as a roadie for The Doors. It turned out, prior to being discovered as an actor, Ford had joined the crew working on the documentary, Feast of Friends, which looked at the band's life on tour.

“I worked on a road tour film of The Doors, we went around for about a week and a half,” Ford once said. “When it was over, I was one step away from joining a Jesuit monastery… I couldn’t keep up with those guys. It was too much".
