The Who co-founder, Pete Townshend has hinted that the band may return for an extensive farewell tour.

Townshend spoke about the Who’s future in a recent interview with the New York Times, where he admitted that any final tour would be about finances, rather than honouring the band’s legacy.

“I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who”, the guitarist admitted. “If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated”.

Earlier, Townshend had said that a final tour for the Who could be on the horizon.

“It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do”, he said. “and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die”.

“what happens next”

Towards the back end of 2023, Pete Townshend had said that it was time that himself and Roger Daltrey sat down, to discuss what’s next for The Who.

“I think it’s time for Roger and I to go to lunch and have a chat about what happens next”, he stated. “Because [the final 2023 tour stop] shouldn’t feel like the end of anything, but it feels like the end of an era”.

Last week, the Who were also joined on stage by singer Eddie Vedder at their show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Townshend and Daltrey were joined on stage by Vedder. They performed a live rendition of ‘The Punk And The Godfather’. This track also featured on their 1973 album ‘Quadrophenia’.
